Catholic Charities Receives $15,000 Grant from Jake Owen Foundation to Support Homeless Families at the Samaritan Center

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach is proud to announce that its Samaritan Center in Vero Beach has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Jake Owen Foundation in May 2025. This generous funding will help provide transitional housing and supportive services to homeless families in Indian River County, empowering them on their path to independence and self-sufficiency.

Helping Families Overcome Homelessness

Homelessness continues to be a significant issue across the Treasure Coast, with families among the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. The 2024 Point in Time study conducted by the Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council identified 701 individuals experiencing homelessness in the region, including 172 children.

At the Samaritan Center, Catholic Charities offers more than just a roof—it offers a path forward. The program provides safe, stable housing paired with a structured, nurturing environment where families can heal, grow, and build a better future. Residents typically stay for 6 to 9 months, during which they receive case management, educational workshops, mental health support, and financial coaching tailored to meet their individual needs.

A Proven Approach to Self-Sufficiency

The Samaritan Center requires residents to actively participate in their journey to independence. Each adult must:

  • Obtain and maintain employment

  • Open a bank account and save at least 75% of their earnings

  • Participate in life-skills education on topics like positive parenting, financial literacy, household management, and conflict resolution

Residents progress through a Four-Tiered Program that tracks and supports their development toward long-term independence. The result? A 90% success rate of residents living independently six months after graduating at Level III or higher.

The Jake Owen Foundation’s Role

The support from the Jake Owen Foundation comes at a critical time, as rising housing and living costs continue to place pressure on working families in Indian River County. This $15,000 grant will directly fund the operational and programmatic needs of the Samaritan Center, including:

  • Staff salaries for supportive services

  • Educational and life-skills materials

  • On-site mental health services

  • Transportation assistance and basic living needs

The Jake Owen Foundation’s investment ensures that homeless families in our community have access to the tools and support they need to rebuild their lives and achieve lasting stability.

Deepest Gratitude

Catholic Charities extends our heartfelt thanks to the Jake Owen Foundation for their commitment to strengthening the Indian River community. Their partnership in this mission will help break the cycle of homelessness, restore dignity, and give vulnerable families the chance to thrive.

Since its founding in 1992, the Samaritan Center has been a vital resource for families in crisis. With this generous support, we can continue to provide hope, healing, and a fresh start for those who need it most.
