Catholic Charities Receives $40,000 Grant from John’s Island Community Service League to Support Homeless Families

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach is honored to announce it has received a $40,000 grant award from the John’s Island Community Service League in support of its Samaritan Center in Vero Beach.

This generous funding will directly benefit the Samaritan Center’s transitional housing program, which provides safe housing and comprehensive support services to homeless families in Indian River County.

The Samaritan Center offers a structured, multi-level program designed to help families achieve long-term stability and independence. Residents receive individualized case management, life skills training in areas such as budgeting and parenting, employment support, and access to education and mental health services.

Each year, the program serves approximately 60 individuals—primarily families with children—who are experiencing homelessness or are at imminent risk of losing their housing. Through a combination of safe shelter and intensive support, families are empowered to rebuild their lives and transition into permanent housing.

“We are deeply grateful to the John’s Island Community Service League for their continued generosity and commitment to our mission,” said Ellen T. Wayne, CEO of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach. This investment brings hope to families in crisis and strengthens our ability to walk alongside them as they work toward stability, dignity, and a brighter future.”

The need for transitional housing and supportive services remains significant. Many families in Indian River County face barriers such as rising housing costs, financial instability, and limited access to resources. The Samaritan Center addresses these challenges through a holistic, evidence-based approach that promotes self-sufficiency and long-term success.

Catholic Charities extends its sincere appreciation to the John’s Island Community Service League for their partnership and shared commitment to serving those most in need. Together, we are transforming lives and building stronger, more resilient families in our community.
